Keep your fingers crossed for continued good weather so we can actually get in both January and February meetings. Thank you everyone who brought cookies to the January meeting. February birthday girls, don't forget to bring your treats to share. Anyone else wishing to do a little baking, bring your goodies and we'll be happy to taste test them for you. Don't forget to wear your Hill N Hollow name tags!! See you in February. Hospitality. Mary Spilman & Barb Jaeger ___________________________________________________________ PROGRAM Happy Valentine’s Day! The program this month will be Self-Defense for Seniors, and it will be presented by Paul Mruk. Mr. Mruk is a retired Memphis police officer, as well as a Marine Corps and Tennessee Air National Guard veteran. Since we all go on vacations and attend out-of-town quilt shows, we can use the tips and ideas he has to share. His presentation is assured to be entertaining as well as informative. Diana Arikan, Program Chairman _______________________________________________________ REFRESHMENTS Hi, it's Linda Shute and I am again the Refreshments chairperson for this year. Last year you made it so easy for me as the chairperson because you birthday girls faithfully brought goodies to the guild meetings! Please contribute to our refreshments stash when it is your birthday month. It should be easy to remember when it is your turn to bring snacks. And you know we all look forward to delicious goodies! Of course, even if it isn't your birthday month, you can contribute. ________________________________________________________ NEWSLETTER TREASURE HUNT The February Treasure Hunt item to look for is: spool of thread. Send an email to hillnhollowquilters@gmail.com with the items location and your full name in the body of your email. If you receive the newsletter by snail-mail you can call me-870-425-0045. Names will be drawn at the next day meeting. Have fun! Sharon Crozier, Newsletter Editor ________________________________________________________ Still Seeking a few Good Women (or Men) We’re off to a great start for 2012! The Board of Directors met Jan. 11 to begin cussing and discussing the budget and to make progress on plans for 2012. I offer thanks to Diana Murray, who volunteered to coordinate Show & Tell at our Friday meetings. But we still need some help. We also really need three people who are about the future of the guild to help in the search for 2013 officers. You will find the Nominating Committee job easier if you know a fair number of guild members, but anyone can fill this very important job. Linda Jirka, as president-elect, will be guild president in 2013. But she will need a new treasurer because Marlene Gwaltney will be “retiring” from that job. The Nominating Committee also identifies strong candidates for the jobs of vice president/night liaison, secretary and president-elect. It’s an important job and one I hope you will consider. Please contact me if you are interested. Last but not least, we could use a quilt show committee chair for the 2013 Quilt Show. There will be few duties in 2012, but you’ll be able to hit the ground running on planning and execution next year if you step up now. We’ve already reserved dates with the Baxter County Fairgrounds: Oct. 24-16, 2013! Looking forward to 2012 Vicki Kauth, president ________________________________________________________ Raffle Quilt for 2012 I hope by now everyone has seen the Raffle Quilt for 2012 “The Jewel Box”. Bonnie Ratzel and her committee have done a great job finding the perfect design, choosing fabric and a spectacular job of piecing and getting the job done. The quilt was quilted by Mary Ann Giesy, a Guild member. Our hats are off to these talented ladies. Tickets will be available for pickup at both the night and day Guild meeting in February. Please look for us when you arrive and pick up your tickets. This is the major fund raiser for the year and you are asked to participate in our efforts to raise $6,000 by the sale of your raffle tickets. Please do your part and plan to either sell or purchase tickets that have been assigned to you. Each Guild member will receive 24 tickets and extra tickets are available for those who are willing to do more than their share. Tickets are priced at $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. We are looking for creative ways to market our tickets and let the community know about our Guild and Raffle Quilt.. If you belong to a group and would like us to come to your meeting and show the quilt and possibly give a short demonstration about the Guild and how we use the proceeds from our raffle tickets, please contact me at 870-405-2634 or bobandjoann@suddenlink.net. $6,000 in raffle proceeds is an ambitious goal; but I know we can achieve it if we work together and all do our share. JoAnn Moore ________________________________________________________ Reminder! Did YOU Spend Money Lately? Please remember that if you spend money on behalf of the guild, you must turn in the receipt and a reimbursement form signed by your committee chair within 60 days of incurring the expense. The guild bylaws stipulate that expenses older than 60 days become the responsibility of the member who incurred them. You’ll find the reimbursement form on the guild’s website under the “Treasurer’s Page” tab. Vicki Kauth _________________________________________________________ CHECK IT OUT! The AQS Guide to Quilt Care published by AQS is a small book that is chucked full of information about quilt care, repair, cleaning, displaying your quilts, and other things the quilter will run into. There is a section that is the best Glossary of terms I have ever seen. Did you know the term Calico meant small scale cottons that came from Calcutta originally? It was just published in 2011 and is a book you may want to have in your own libraries. Hope you check it out. Sue Rogers, Workshop Chairperson ___________________________________________________________ Community Quilts In January, 10 baby quilts were turned in and will be delivered to the Women's Center at Baxter hospital. There were also 3 twin quilts turned in and will go to Hospice. Several of the baby quilts did not have the required label and I would like to remind everyone that I have labels available at each meeting and would encourage you to pick up what you need and sew them on before turning in. Hospice is in need of more twin size quilts. Please consider making a quilt for their patients. (A twin size quilt is approximately 68 X 86 inches.) The guild has voted not to award pins for community quilts but will have a drawing in December for a larger gift. Each baby quilt will be one entry and the larger quilts will be two entries. This year the drawing will be for a beautiful quilt stand made by Don Porretto and donated to the committee by a guild member.
